Console gaming industry is on the verge of HD revolution with both Microsoft and Sony willing to upgrade their respective consoles to next-gen HD supportive machines. The absence of HD hit gaming industry pretty hard surfacing its need on all consoles, including Nintendo Wii.
Technical issues landed Nintendo in a legal trouble with GameCube. Taking lesson from that incident, they have devised a different plan for Nintendo Wii. Their prediction about spread of HDTV was proved to be correct. But, it took 3-4 years for Nintendo to choose the correct direction and the market became wide open with Nintendo back in the race. In previous generation, Wii was considered as ‘the last option’ behind PS3 and Xbox 360. But, current generation of Nintendo Wii has made them definitive console gaming market leaders.
Statistics also prove Wii’s leadership with Nintendo selling about 20 million units more than the 2nd ranked console- Xbox 360. According to market report, Nintendo has sold 50.39 million units of Nintendo Wii as or March 2009. At the same time, Xbox 360 succeeded in selling just 30.2 million units and PS3 count reached 22.73 million. But, the potential advantage for Nintendo was in relatively low price for Wii. They generated massive profits from Wii sales that saw them rise from 3rd position to 1st in no time.
With US switching to HD digital telecast just a month ago, the possibility of Wii HD seems bleak. The strategy seems to be correct as they predict lower sales of HDTVs in coming years.
